Why choose VITTEL® natural mineral water?

Water is essential for the body to function properly1! So why choose to drink natural mineral water such as VITTEL®? Originating from underground aquifers and bottled at the source, natural mineral waters are distinguished by their original purity and stable mineral composition.

Every mineral water is unique! VITTEL® natural mineral water (source: Grande Source) is the result of a long journey and filtration through the underground rocks of the Vosges, which gives it its balanced mineral composition. Recognised for its qualities by the French National Academy of Medicine more than 170 years ago, in 1855, it was also recognised as being of public interest in 1903.

1Water contributes to the maintenance of normal physical and cognitive functions. Consume at least 2L of water per day from all sources.

How do you guarantee the quality of VITTEL® natural mineral water, and can I consume it safely?

VITTEL® natural mineral water, like all our products, can be consumed safely. Its unique composition, as shown on the label, has always been preserved to guarantee optimal quality. From the source to the bottle, every stage is closely monitored and hundreds of checks are carried out every day.

Is VITTEL® water subject to the same treatments as tap water?

Unlike tap water, which may come from surface water or groundwater, natural mineral waters such as VITTEL® come exclusively from underground sources and cannot undergo any chemical treatment. They meet specific standards that guarantee their quality and the stability of their mineral composition.

What minerals are present in VITTEL® natural mineral water?

During its long journey through the Vosges rock, VITTEL® natural mineral water naturally becomes enriched with minerals. Its distinctive character lies in its unique and balanced mineral composition, shown on its label: it notably contains calcium (240 mg/L) and sulphates (400 mg/L), and is low in sodium. Did you know? By drinking 1 litre of VITTEL® natural mineral water every day, you already provide your body with 30% of its recommended calcium intake2.

Do you add minerals to VITTEL® natural mineral water?

VITTEL® is a unique natural mineral water. We do not add anything to it, in accordance with current legislation on natural mineral waters. Our water naturally becomes enriched with minerals over time as it passes through the underground rocks of the Vosges.

Why do VITTEL® bottles display a consumption date?

This is a date of minimum durability, which tells you until when you can fully enjoy the taste qualities of your unopened VITTEL® natural mineral water. To preserve all their freshness, we recommend storing your bottles in a dry, odour-free place, protected from frost and heat. Once opened, bottles should be kept in the refrigerator and consumed within three days.

What concrete actions is VITTEL® taking to help protect water resources?

Our priority is to preserve water resources so that they can retain their unique qualities, replenish themselves and remain available for everyone to enjoy, both today and tomorrow.

More than 30 years ago, we created an innovative programme, AGRIVAIR, which supports and assists around forty farmers located around the VITTEL® spring in implementing agricultural practices adapted to local soil and water resource preservation challenges. These practices notably include a zero-pesticide approach, limited use of fertilisers and crop rotation.

We also work with the French National Forests Office (ONF) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) to help preserve 300 hectares of forest located near the spring (the water infiltration area).

Is the volume of water withdrawn at the source controlled?

Yes, the amount of water withdrawn from the VITTEL® springs is controlled at several levels. The prefecture determines the maximum volume that may be withdrawn based on the usage needs of local stakeholders and residents, and issues authorisations. These authorisations take the effects of climate change into account. All withdrawals from the VITTEL® spring are known, identified and authorised by the competent authorities. Every m³ of water collected is declared to the authorities.

To improve the monitoring of water resources, we took the initiative to install measuring tools in the field. They enable continuous assessment of water levels and provide a better understanding of aquifer behaviour. These data are sent to the authorities and the water resources observatory.

Regarding the only aquifer in deficit in the area (known as the GTI), which is used by multiple public and private stakeholders, we voluntarily asked the authorities to reduce our withdrawal authorisations with a view to restoring the balance of this aquifer.

Our objective: high-quality water and responsible management of water resources to ensure their long-term sustainability in the Vosges region where your VITTEL® natural mineral water is bottled.

Are VITTEL® plastic bottles recyclable?

All VITTEL® natural mineral waters from the 33cL format to the 1.5L format are packaged in recyclable plastic bottles (bottle and cap, excluding label). Alongside other industry stakeholders, particularly CITEO, we are also working to improve collection and recycling by raising consumer awareness, among other things, of proper sorting practices.

Why do you not replace plastic with glass?

VITTEL® accompanies you during all your consumption occasions and daily activities. Each type of packaging meets a need: an attractive glass bottle at a restaurant, our 6L container for the family, a small bottle in your backpack… each material has its purpose! What matters is promoting the circularity of all our packaging. Our bottle formats from 33cL to 75cL, our 6L natural mineral water container and all our flavoured ranges are made from 100% recycled plastic excluding cap and label, as well as pouring spout and handle for VITTEL® 6L. For our 1L and 1.5L natural mineral water bottle formats, we incorporate 30% recycled plastic excluding cap and label. The history of VITTEL® in the 19th century was written with returnable glass bottles! Even today, when you order VITTEL® natural mineral water in a restaurant, there is a good chance that the bottle has had a previous life: 90% of our glass bottles sold in cafés, hotels and restaurants are returnable for reuse3.

And that is not all: we are working on new projects to promote deposit-return schemes for reuse in supermarkets. Look out for them in your supermarkets!

Why offer a new 6L format?

Designed for the whole family, our new 6L format is practical and easy to use. With its pouring-spout cap and flat surface on top of the pack, this format allows you to serve easily down to the last drop simply by tilting the bottle. You can easily place it on its side in the refrigerator or in the kitchen, whether you prefer your water chilled or at room temperature.

The VITTEL® 6L format, made from 100% recycled material (excluding cap, label, pouring spout and handle), reduces the amount of plastic used per litre by 25%4. With this innovation, we are strengthening our commitment to reducing the environmental impact of our packaging.
